Weight Loss the Healthy Way
Weight Loss the Healthy way
By Dr. Megan Glaser, DOM
Weight loss is one of the most common things my patients get treated for in my office. Both men and
women are concerned with their weight whether they are overweight or underweight, they all want
to look and feel their best and be healthier. That's where I come in....Hi I'm Dr. Glaser, DOM and I'm
a Doctor of Oriental medicine/Holistic Practitioner and Weight loss is one of my specialties! Weight
loss is going to require different tactics for each individual patient. This is why FAD diets don't work!
They may work for some but not all and the reason being is that everyone has a different body
composition as well as different disorders or imbalances present in the body. As an acupuncture
Physician trained in both Western and Eastern medicine, before determining any plan of action for my
patients, I first do a thorough intake and determine a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made , I treat the
patient according to the diagnosis. This gets the best results because when your body is in balance
your weight will be as well! Once I determine a diagnosis and specify the root cause of the imbalance,
I then construct a treatment protocol that can include anything from acupuncture treatments, herbal
formulas/vitamin supplementation, Lipotropic Weight loss injections, Body Sculpting & more!
This individualized treatment protocol is what brings patients long term success at a healthier weight
and a healthier body overall.
There are a wide array of weight loss drugs on the market today including the commonly known weight
loss injections Ozempic, Wegovy, Semiglutide, Tirzepatide and Zepbound. These drugs were orginally
formulated as diabetes medications with a side effect of weight loss, so they began to market and use
the drug to induce weight loss. These drugs induce weight loss by slowing stomach emptying and
causing a feeling of fullness so the patient doesn't feel hungry, therefore they lose weight easily
without having to change their diet or increase exercise. This sounds great right? Wrong!
This drug class may cause quick weight loss but it comes with lots of side effects including
nausea, vomiting, constipation, gastroparesis, thyroid cancer and pancreatitis and even blindness just to name a few.
Also, when stopping the medication the weight trickles back quickly as the drug slows the metabolism
due to consuming a low calorie intake. There are many lawsuits going on currently regarding these
medications and you don't even need a physician to prescribe them anymore. Isn't that scary?!
I've not only heard about these horrible side effects on the internet but many of my weight loss patients
have had personal experiences with these medications before coming to see me and multiple have been
hospitalized. There has been such an influx of people using these drugs for weight loss that the
diabetic patients are having trouble getting their much needed medication. In my opinion, this drug
class should be used to treat diabetics only, as the benefits for these patients outweigh the risks.
Do you remember the drug "Ephedra"? Ephedra comes from the Chinese herb Ma Huang which has
been banned from the United States for many years. Ma Huang is used in Chinese medicine for
respiratory illnesses and is to be used in a smaller dose and for short periods of time. It was
discovered in the United States years ago that one of the side effects of ephedra was weight loss,
so again it was marketed as a weight loss drug. The Weight loss companies making this drug did
not know the correct dosage and that excess amounts could cause heart problems and death, so when
people started dying while taking these weight loss supplements with ephedra it was then banned.
sound familiar? Anything that is synthetic that causes quick weight loss although very intriguing,
usually causes more harm than good. Healthy weight loss is a slow and steady process and should
be thought of as a lifestyle change and if healthy changes are made there are long lasting results and
a healthier body and mind. Most people want the quickest, easiest solution for weight loss without having
to change their current habits. Just remember, if it's quick it usually makes you sick! I feel that with
certain weight loss drugs like ozempic, if the patient is diabetic or obese and the benefit outweighs
the risk then these drugs are probably fine for them to take. On the other hand for someone that wants
to lose 10-20 pounds that is not obese or diabetic there are much healthier ways this can be achieved
and I can help! I encourage new patients to schedule a FREE Consultation with me to learn about the
wide array of healthy weight management options I have available.
