Mind & Body Balance with Acupuncture

Mind & Body Balance with Acupuncture

By Dr. Megan Glaser, DOM

What is Acupuncture?  Acupuncture is the insertion of hair like needles into different points in the body

to encourage blood flow, relieve pain and assist in healing all sorts of disorders and illnesses including

stress and anxiety. Acupuncture is an ancient practice that started in China over 3000 years ago.

It was introduced in America in the early 1800's. When it first started around 6000 BCE, sharpened

stones and bones were used instead of needles. Today individually packaged sterile needles are used.

The needles are so tiny they are barely felt. This treatment works so well that most patients think

the needles are infused with medicine which they are not . The amazing results are just the magic

of acupuncture!

The body contains 12 organ system meridians which can be thought of as roadways in the body and

we have "Qi" which is energy in the body and blood which both flow through these meridians. If there

is a car accident on the road it not only will cause a blockage in traffic on that road but also other

incoming roadways. This is also how it works in the body. If there is a blockage of Qi or Blood in

an organ system meridian it will affect other organ systems as well causing multiple symptoms such as

headaches and digestive issues. Chinese medicine Practitioners are meticulously trained in both

Western medicine and Eastern medicine to understand how common diseases and disorders are

connected. On the first acupuncture visit the Doctor will go through a thorough intake and evaluation

to determine the diagnosis and root cause of the symptoms. Following this intake and evaluation the

Doctor will then decide a treatment protocol which can include a wide array of services including

acupuncture, cupping, guasha, e-stim, herbal and nutritional supplementation and food therapy.

The Physician will determine how many treatments are needed for the patient to receive the best

results for their diagnosis.

The mind & body are much more connected than we think. If a patient is experiencing stress or

trauma this can manifest into other physical symptoms in the body. Many patients will come in

for back pain, receive an acupuncture treatment and notice their anxiety is less and their sleep is better.

This is because acupuncture balances both the mind and body. When the Physician is evaluating the

patient there are many things that are taken into account such as sleep patterns, appetite, pain in specific

areas, mood, etc. These things are all connected and when the practitioner determines the diagnosis

multiple symptoms can be resolved as a result of the treatment. Patients will commonly receive treatment

and notice their digestion is suddenly better or they aren't as irritable. This is an amazing part of the

medicine that most people aren't aware of as it's more commonly known to treat pain.

Acupuncture can actually treat much more than pain! Some common issues treated with acupuncture

are as follows; migraine headaches, PMS, PCOS, menopause symptoms, hormone imbalances, thyroid

issues, anxiety, depression, infertility, neuropathy, plantar fascitis, insomnia, fibromyalgia, sports

injuries, ADD, ADHD, PTSD, tinnitus, stroke complications, trigeminal neuralgia and pain

disorders due to trauma just to name a few. Dr. Megan Glaser, DOM specializes in all the above!
